AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE FACEPLANTS
"to be a great band, you have to be great live." ThAT IS the motto VANCOUVER BASED ROCK band known as the faceplants live by. currently riding off the SUCCESS OF their LATEST single 'who i am inside', we caught up with the guys to hear more about what's to come. WITH THEIR ECLECTIC FASHION SENSE AND UNIQUE SOUND, it's hard to miss them. and you definitely wouldn't want to.
Talk about the early beginnings of the band, how did you come together?
The band was originally started by Daniel and I back in the day. We’ve been playing music together since we were 12 years old. We went to high school with Graham and we met Chris and Paddy through other Vancouver bands playing shows around town!
It’s been 5 years since you released your EP, what has IT been like building your fanbase since then?
Wow, that’s a loaded question. Pretty much everything has changed! We’ve grown together as a band and as individuals. In our personal lives we’ve gone from teenagers to adults and so has our fans. We’ve always tried to have a personal connection with each of our fans and everyone who supports us.
For The Faceplants “fans” seems like a dirty word to us. We prefer “frands” haha - fans/friends.
We see a lot of artists out there really taking their success for granted and really forgetting who’s actually in control. Your fans really allow you to start/sustain your career & dreams. We’ve really drove it home with our band that our success we’ve reached so far is all because of all the amazing people who have had our back, and we have theirs.
When you use the word “fan” it makes them feel like their below you or something, were on the same playing ground and we appreciate them just as much as they appreciate us. FRANDS!
What was it like releasing your first EP and seeing it garner airplay on MuchMusic?
They always say the first record/EP is the easiest because you got your whole life up to then to write it! The second not so much haha and that’s what we're working on now!
Getting our video played on MuchMusic was super cool. At the time MuchMusic and the videos being played on Much was still a big deal. It was a great bragging right to our friends haha.
The Faceplants have done a handful of videos since then and I wish that MuchMusic was still playing music videos like they used to!

What was the process like making your debut album?
The process was pretty awesome. It was the first time that we’d been in a real studio and worked with a real producer, Tommy Mac from Hedley, Tommy really helped us take our songwriting and the way we ran our band to the next level. Looking back we’ve come so far from that EP and it doesn’t even sound like us anymore. It was an important process to go through to find out who we really are as a band and as individuals.
Talk about 'Who I Am Inside' - What does it mean to you and why was it chosen as the first single?
‘Who I Am Inside’ was a song that really changed everything. I remember when Daniel came up to me and played me ‘Who I Am Inside’ the first time on his guitar. It was a song that was super real to him and to all of us. It was the first song we had released that really tapped into writing songs that we really cared about on a emotional level.
I feel like it's super easy to be fake and to appear like everything in your life is amazing when everything on the inside is a totally different story. Everybody can relate to going through some type of internal struggle, that's why we chose it for our latest single.
When it comes to your music videos, how involved are you in the creative process?
The last three music videos we’ve done we’ve pretty much taken the bull by the horns. Every aspect of the video, we’ve have had our hands on it.
Daniels really gotten into directing and coming up with some amazing video concepts. We then as a band collaborate on potential Vignettes and overall vibes for the video. I end up dealing with the budgets, video logistics and making sure everyone knows what’s going on. After everything is set in stone, we normally hire a small film crew who are just as excited about the project as we are. The last two videos we’ve done Daniel actually edited them also. We really pride ourselves on our DIY mentality and having as much creative control over our art as we can.

What would you say about the future of the Canadian music industry?
Honestly Canada is killing it right now. Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, Drake, The Weeknd, Alessia Cara are literally all over the world! Were very thankful to live in such a amazing country and we really hope we can have our success reach around the world like theirs has!
